The Book or the Baby?

by | 12 Jan 2014

I’ve started to wonder whether a book could actually be better than a baby. This week I got a great review from Kate Brian, author of The Complete Guide to IVF, and the scales totally tipped. In fact, the sense of validation made me feel as if my struggle to have a baby could have been worth it. Maybe it was even meant to be.

But of course they’re different. I know that. The book is the book. And the baby is the baby. The book can’t wear Oshkosh B’gosh dungarees. The book isn’t interested in The Very Hungry Caterpillar or The Tiger Who Came to Tea. The book isn’t an excuse to go to Disneyland. I’ve always wanted to go to Disneyland.

But think about it. The book is never going to grow up and leave me. It’s never going to tell me that it hates me and never wanted to be born. And when people tell me they like it, I feel as proud as any mother. Yes, I’m definitely starting to wonder whether, this year, books are the new babies.

So this week’s question? What’s your new baby?
