Heaven in a Shoebox

by | 5 Jan 2014

And I’m not talking Jimmy Choo. A while ago my partner and I swapped our big house outside London for a tiny flat in Covent Garden. It’s heaven in a shoebox. The whole living out of London thing was one of our many attempts to conquer our infertility. We thought that maybe it would precipitate a change of pace which would in turn help me get pregnant. It didn’t…

We moved back to London and, because we don’t have schools or people carriers to worry about, we decided to rent a flat as central as we could get it. And, I have to say, it’s been one of the blessings of my infertility. We would never have come here otherwise, and I love it.

So, a few weeks ago, when I started to plan the launch of my book, the pursuit of motherhood, which is officially published on 1st February, I said to my partner that my dream would be to hold it at our local Waterstones. He looked at me in that way he looks when he doesn’t want me to be disappointed. I do understand why – first time author who has written a memoir on just about the most unfashionable subject in the world. It ain’t the most likely bestseller. But undeterred, I trotted off and asked them. And, because there is a God in Heaven, they said YES!

So on 4th February at Waterstones Covent Garden, I’ll be launching my book and doing a Q & A with Janet Ellis, actress, broadcaster and mother to Strictly’s Sophie. I can’t think of a better person to chair it. Having watched her over the last few months with love and pride on her face as Sophie danced, she of all people will be able to understand how hard it could be if you can’t be a mother. And although my book might never be a bestseller, I know I am one of many women. I know I’m not alone.

So what’s the question – Are you coming?

Waterstones Covent Garden, 9-13 Garrick Street, London WC2E 9BA

Well done! That’s great and I’ll be there. And of course I couldn’t agree more about the joys of living right in the centre of town being one of the upsides of travelling relatively light. London looks different from Zone One 🙂
